It was senior night here at Ridgeland for the Lady Panther Volleyball team. There are nine seniors on the team this year, six who have played together since they were in middle school.
The two team captions are Te’a Owens (out side hitter) and Taylor Williams (setter). The rest of the seniors are Shanna Burk (defensive specialist), Jesse Owens (defensive specialist), Morgen Simmons (defensive specialist), Haleigh Fogtman (middle hitter), Jamese Miller (outside hitter), Shelby Medlin (defensive specialist), and Zady Carden (middle hitter).
Ridgeland, the eighth-ranked team started the night off with a 25-17, 25-20 win over sixth-ranked team LFO. While Ridgeland had a sweet victory over LFO, they just fell short of the win against Gordon Lee.
“Obviously you don’t want to lose on Senior Night, but to get a chance to play a really good team like Gordon Lee before we have to go into our area tournament may end up beings a blessing for us. I know I have a team that can compete, but it just depends on if that team shows up this weekend. LaFayette will be tough to beat, especially at their place,” says head coach April Lemonds.
Te’a Owens finished the night with 27 kills, 20 digs, and six aces, while Taylor Williams had 44 assists. Haleigh Fogtman added 16 kills, while Zady Carden and Jamese Miller both had seven kills each. Along with the offense, defense was on fire as well. Morgen Simmons recorded 16 digs, followed by Jesse Owens who had nine digs, Shelby Medlin with eight, and Shanna Burk with six.
